Americans spend billions on funerals every year, but the funeral or burial services don't have to be high-priced. A funeral can be a simple internment or an elaborate affair with music, speakers, customised boxes and refreshments for mourners. Family, religious or personal choices are important, but cost and convenience should be thought to be as well.

"Many families are compelled to make choices about funerals under stress," said Michelle L. Corey, BBB President and Ceo. "By training themselves about the process and taking time to raise questions and compare costs, families can avoid overspending. They're more likely to get the kind of service they need, too."

The Federal Trade Commission's Funeral Rule gives consumers numerous rights, including the inherent right to receive written price lists, illustrations of graveyard or legal necessities and the selection of employing a container other than a box for cremation. Some graveyards have their own needs, which must be explained totally before you make a purchase.
